Luddesdown Organic Farms What a relief to see the back of January! Christmas seems an age ago and the weather has been the worst we can remember for a long time. We are very proud of our drivers who have delivered virtually every box to you through the bad weather. Harvesting your vegetables has not been an easy task either, but again our stalwart pickers have braved the cold and done the job! On the farm Honey has produced her latest litter of 10 piglets, all doing well and staying warm in their farrowing ark. They will be kept in for approximately 2 weeks before they venture outside. Honey has moved from the field at the back of the houses and is now up the steps by the post box in Orchard field. All the heifers have now calved and the main herd will start to calve later this month. Last year’s calves were weaned towards the end of January, giving us all a few sleepless nights! Next year’s breeding heifers have been picked out to go with the bull. We have it on good authority from the Kent County Council that the fly-tippers who gave us so much grief in November and December have been caught and will face prosecution. We are busy hedge-cutting, cleaning cereal seed for spring sowing, chitting potatoes ready for planting and ordering seed for the vegetable box scheme. This Friday afternoon the NFU is arranging for our local MP to visit the farm and meet with ourselves and other local farmers of our branch for a fact finding session. |
